Jesus Christ's MARCHING ORDERS — John Wycliffe
The first hand-written English language Bible manuscripts, translated from the Latin, were produced in 1380's AD by John Wycliffe. He was an Oxford professor, scholar, and theologian. Wycliffe was well known throughout Europe for his opposition to the teaching of the organized Church, which he believed to be contrary to the Bible. With the help of his followers, called the Lollards, and his assistant Purvey — many other faithful scribes, Wycliffe produced dozens of English language manuscript copies of the scriptures. They were translated out of the Latin Vulgate, which was the only Bible text available to Wycliffe. The Pope was so infuriated by his teachings and his translation of the Bible into English, that 44 years after Wycliffe had died, he ordered the bones to be dug-up, crushed, and scattered in the river!
John Wycliffe's Words
"The true Christian was intended by Christ to prove all things by the Word of God: all churches, all ministers, all teaching, all preaching, all doctrines, all sermons, all writings, all opinions, all practices.
These are His MARCHING ORDERS. Prove all by the Word of God; measure all by the measure of the Bible; compare all with the standard of the Bible; weigh all in the balances of the Bible; examine all by the light of the Bible; test all in the crucible of the Bible.
That which cannot abide the fire of the Bible, reject, refuse, repudiate, and cast away. This is the flag which He [Jesus Christ] nailed to the mast. May it never be lowered!"
