As I write at this date, America is getting ready to go the polls November 8 and select the next President of the United States. Obviously, with the challenges our country is now facing; it will have an lasting impact upon the the future of our nation. I am going to state a truth of scripture however; that American voters may very well NOT be who ULTIMATELY decide will be the most powerful leader in the world today. It could very well be Almighty God who decidedly makes this determination!
God has chosen great leaders in the past
If we look in the Bible, we certainly see that God choosing the leader of a great nation is not without precedent. I want to take you back to the about the year 480 B. C. Nebuchadnezzar was King over the great Babylonian Empire. This powerful Kingdom had taken Judah into captivity about 606 B.C. The prophet Daniel was among the captives. Nebuchadnezzar was puffed up with pride over his position and authority. God had given the King a vision, which Daniel had been called into interpret. You can read of this in your Bible in the fourth chapter of Daniel. Notice now what Daniel reveals to this Gentile King:
" This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king: That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times (years) shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and GIVETH TO WHOMSOEVER HE WILL" (Daniel 4:24-25).
Nebuchadnezzar lives as a beast of the field for seven years
Incredibly, this happened. Who but God; could have changed the metabolism of a man so that he would be able to assimilate and digest grass as an oxen; and enabled him to survive for 7 full years living as a beast of the fields? Read about it in Daniel —
"At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. The king spake, and said, 'Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?' While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, 'O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will. The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. 'And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured Him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation: And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and He doeth according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him, What doest thou? At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase' (Daniel 4:29-37).
Daniel would earlier in this chapter reconfirm what Nebuchadnezzar had been humbled to learn when he stated in verse 17 — " to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever He will, and setteth up over it the BASETH of men".
Does God choose Presidents?
So what does that mean for the United States? Has God chosen SOME of our Presidents before? I think most who truly understand the blessings of our country are convicted that He has. Studying the history of many of the men who have governed our country is an inspiring study indeed. Most of them, such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln deeply realized the blessings God had poured out upon our country.
Notice what Abraham Lincoln would write — "We find ourselves," he said, "in the peaceful possession of the fairest portion of the earth, as regards fertility of soil, extent of territory, and salubrity of climate ... We ... find ourselves the legal inheritors of these fundamental blessings We toiled not in the acquirement nor the establishment of them".
Again, in his proclamation of April 30,1863, for a nation-wide day of fasting and prayer, this great president said: "It is the duty of nations, as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God ... and to recognize the sublime truth, announced it he Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord: ... We have been the recipients of the choicest blessing of heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation ever has grown; BUT WE HAVE FORGOTTEN GOD! We have forgotten the gracious Hand which preserved us in peace and multi lied and enriched and strengthened! us; and we have vainly
imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own".
Certainly, meaningful words as our nation approaches the National Day of Thanksgiving.
Will America be given the President she DESERVES?
But let's get back to the election. Will God choose our next President? And further, will He choose to give us a President we DESERVE? When you consider the sins of our nation — such as escalating abortions — forcing God out of the schools — compromises with homosexuality and an avalanche of other national sins — that one is INDEED a most chilling question.
But for those of us believe in God in our country — another sobering thought is that God would turn His eyes away from us, because of our sins and have NO PART in our Government at all. What a sad consideration that really is — that God would quit blessing American at all.
Will God bless America again?
I think of the lyrics of the song Bobby Bare sang decades again;
"God bless America again,
You must know the trouble that she's in
Wash her pretty face,
Dry her eyes and then,
God bless America again".
Will God select our next President? He certainly has the power. The prophet would way in Daniel 2:21 —
"And He changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:".
It tell us again in Psalsms 75:6-7 — For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another".
Only Jesus Christ can solve our problems
The reality is that the problems of our country and this world are too big and overwhelming for one individual to solve. Only one has the shoulders big enough to take care of our problems and that is the promised Messiah — Jesus Christ. Isaiah was the great Messianic prophet who spoke of Him. Notice in Isaiah —
"The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more" (Isaiah 2:1-4).
